What are external and internal parasites in pets?

There are two main types of parasites you should be aware of: external parasites in pets, including fleas, ticks, mites and lice; and internal parasites in pets, such as tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms and heartworms. Both types pose risks to your pets and can affect your home environment.

How do pets get parasites?

Pets pick up parasites through everyday activities such as sniffing or licking soil, eating raw meat, drinking contaminated water, or playing in areas where other animals have defecated. External parasites can also spread by jumping onto clothes, carpets, sofas and pet bedding.

Can parasites infect humans?

Yes. Fleas and ticks can bite humans, causing red, itchy bites and sometimes allergic reactions. Internal parasites, like certain types of worms, can infect humans, especially children who play on floors or in gardens and put their hands in their mouths. While serious cases are rare, parasite transmission from pets to humans is a real risk.

This is why it is important to treat parasites as a household concern, not just a pet problem.

How do we protect our families?

Prevention is always better than cure. A simple test can help you detect parasite risks early and protect your pet.
